JENNIFER VESS
Cyclical
Migratory Movements
As a vessel with the ability to carry, contain and protect, a boat historically has been referred to in the feminine. “Cyclical” and “Migratory Movements” explore the maternal relationships rooted in a biological passing on of life. The performance explores the idea of liminality that exists in perceived dualities: internal and external, beauty and the grotesque, life and death. While in form the vessel alludes to a boat, it also exists as a womb, a hollow structure that functions as the residue that remains of a past life. The performance engages and activates the object for further questioning, an empty object that allows me to fill it with my own subconscious. Dragging this vessel through the snow, not clear of a destination, I pursue the journey of carrying, pulling, navigating and coming to terms with the cyclical patterns we often find ourselves repeating.
